Our Process
Forging
We fuse bars of raw steel together under precise conditions to produce our laminated steel billets. We then forge the blade to shape working in a taper in both directions, from heel to tip and from spine to edge.
Heat Treat
Repeated heating and cooling of the blade blanks refines grain structure and relieves any residual stresses. We then heat them to critical temperature followed by a fast quench and tempering cycle to produce the required mechanical properties.
Grinding
The soft cladding is ground off to reveal the hardened core and define the cutting geometry of the blade. This bevel is then polished and etched to display the layers in the steel.
Handling
Handles are cut from seasoned boards of native hardwoods and fitted with a ferrule. The block is sanded to a tapering octagonal shape. On the blade side, we round off the spine and polish the choil before fitting the tang to the handle.
Sharpening
Each knife is individually sharpened by hand on a series of progressively finer Japanese whetstones and then stropped on leather.
